Knights In Action - Community

Knights are called to serve others. Our first principle is Charity – at home with our families and in our communities. When Knights of Columbus members come together they accomplish great things.

Here are Community Programs our council participates in.

Run 5K

Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble

Our Council's mission is to raise money for local charities. Each year on Thanksgiving morning we organize The Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble. A run and walk, it is a U.S. Track & Field certified five kilometer race that winds through historic downtown Charleston and out to the peninsula.

The event annually attracts over 8,000 participants from 35 states, Canada and Mexico who run and/or walk. It is truly established as a premiere running 5K event in South Carolina.

Proceeds directly from the run are donated to non-profit organizations in the Charleston area. Last year, the Turkey Day Run gave money to more than 30 charities. Funds also contribute to other council programs like Education Scholarships, Parish Support, Seminarian Support, Food For Families, and Coats For Kids, to name a few.

Coats for Kids

Coats For Kids

Along with other Councils across North America, our Council purchases new winter coats and distribute them to the children in need. Locally we donate them through the Our Lady Of Mercy Outreach Center.

The goal of the Coats for Kids program is to ensure that no child in North America goes without a coat during the winter season. Through the dedication of councils across the United States and Canada, hundreds of thousands of new winter coats have been distributed to children since the program’s inception.

Habitat House

Habitat For Humanity

Building homes with families in need, Knights of Columbus councils work closely with Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit Christian organization, to build homes for families in need at substantially reduced costs. Each year, councils throughout the Order donate considerable volunteer hours and dollars to this worthy cause.

We donate funds from our annual 5k race, The Turkeyday Run & Gobble Wobble, to the local Habitat For Humanity program.

Students Essay

Catholic Citizenship Essay

Is designed to encourage youth to become citizens grounded in their faith through creative writing and is open to all qualifying Catholic students. This contest encourages our youth to connect more to their community and faith.

The goal of this program is to involve young Catholics in grades 8 to 12 (public, private, parochial, or home schools during the current school year) in civic discourse and instill in them religious and life-affirming values. The essay is 500-750 words on a specific topic, changing every other year. Entrants are judged on grammar, style, and how clearly they present the theme in a way that showcases creativity, imagination, and overall development of the topic.

Our council participates through Charleston Catholic School, however we encourage participation of students in our parishes. Certificates and prizes are award to the participating and winning students from each council in a District. The winnwers advance to the District competition. The winners of the District Competition then advance to the State Competition and finally nationally.

Helping Hands

Helping Hands

Putting our faith into action, we help people who are less fortunate in the community. In the spirit of our founder, Blessed Michael J. McGivney, councils like ours, lead efforts to assist those most in need.

The Helping Hands program is designed to recognize the important work many councils already do to care for the most disadvantaged members of our communities — the homeless, the addicted, the elderly who may feel isolated and abandoned, and many others.

In addition to supplying water and food to shelters, and Coats For Kids,  we have a Socktoberfest sock donation drive. It has resulted in the donation of close to a thousand pairs of socks to the homeless shelter.

Donate annually, Christmas care packages to the Apostleship of the Sea/Stella Maris. In Charleston, the Apostleship of the Sea/Stella Maris works in conjunction with the Charleston Port and Seafarers’ Society (ChaPSS), an ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to serving the seafaring community.
